Jean Paul Gaultier’s 2001 Haute Couture collection.

Last week a designer sent our custom workroom an incredible silk to be made into draperies. $360 retail per yard and change! Two things struck me; possibly the economic pendulum is swinging on the positive side, and that we have the customer’s trust that we will do the project correctly and beautifully. Wesco’s expertise over the past 63 years certainly helps! At this price point we are almost touching high fashion, or Haute Couture Window Coverings.

Chanel’s 1996 Haute Couture collection.

Well, we can at least dream. Haute Couture actually has bylaws set by the “Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture,” a division of the French Ministry of Industry. A haute couturier is a designer who presides over the creation of hand-finished made-to-order clothing, in a “laboratory” that employs at least 20 workers in Paris. The haute couturier must present a minimum of 25 ensembles twice a year, in January and July, and construct a garment over the course of several fittings. From a peak of 200 before World War II, only 11 authentic couturiers remain, with 4 correspondent members. I can safely say that Wesco Fabrics high fashion custom window coverings cost quite a bit less than the average Haute Couture dress creation that is usually in the $50,000 to $200,000 range.

You won’t see Wesco Fabrics on the fashion runways of Paris, Milan, or New York, but our customers have created wonderful window coverings worthy of accolades. Great interior design almost always includes beautiful custom draperies, custom drapery hardware, creative top treatments, and luxurious bedding.
