2010 in review...

2010 was a wild and crazy ride with gloom fading and hope returning. The disastrous Haiti earthquake and the BP oil spill were front and center. Political ads flooded the media with bombastic assaults and hyper hubris from candidates far and wide. We have sadly plunged into a sound-bite nation and did we ever hear them,…over and over again! There was rioting in the streets in Europe over austerity measures. China overtook Japan as the world’s second largest economy. WikiLeaks told us more than we were ever supposed to know. Yes, we are gossip freaks! The new conservative firebrands in congress received a dose of reality during the last lame duck session as President Obama played a tough hand of poker.

Marla and I had our 2010 sleepless nights over the state of the economy, but business is improving a bit. Any good news is great! We relished wonderful moments with our family and polished babysitting skills with our grandsons. We did our best to reduce phrases like “wash your hands, those vegetables are good for you, do your parents let you watch this, and, do you want a time out,” from our lexicons.

This is my favorite 2010 memory.

My favorite adventure in 2010 was visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Borneo.

My favorite “slow travel” moment was exploring a 6 block radius in Rome with crutches. Walking at night down the Via Margutta, where Federico Fellini once lived, was very special.

There were many great 2010 foodie moments. My favorite was a veal dinner Marla prepared and accompanied by an incredible super Tuscan wine. Our meal at la Tour d’ Argent in Paris was mesmerizing! A pancake breakfast at my mother’s house was a fabulous nostalgic journey.

There were many 2010 movie moments, but Swedish actress Noomi Repace, was unforgettable in Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl…” series! “Black Swan” was dark and disturbing but Natalie Portman is surely a lock for an Academy Award nomination! I loved Jeff Bridges in “True Grit.” I can’t wait to see Colin Firth in “The King’s Speech.”

Maybe I did watch too much TV this year, but there were some great productions. “Boardwalk Empire” was totally addictive! “So you think you can dance” featured incredible performances in 2010! I love HBO’s “Bored to Death.” Sunday evenings have me glued to Masterpiece Theatre! “Top Chef” was the best ever! A rarely seen movie shown on TV and the theatre in 2010 was “Carlos.” Edgar Ramirez was incredible as Illich Ramirez Sanchez, or “Carlos the Jackal.”

My favorite Wesco Fabrics memory was hosting a group of customers to Bali last spring.

My favorite holiday with no business involved was visiting Positano and cycling in Northern Italy.

The greatest family dinner in 2010 was celebration of our daughter’s special birthday in Denver!

I have many personal goals to pursue in 2011. I will continue ramping up my sense of curiosity. I want to listen more and talk less in 2011. That will be challenging. I will tamp down my innate cynicism, but continue to ask questions like “why?” I will stoke my creative fires with travel, reading, and plunging into areas that are not in my comfort zone. I will take more time to slow up and savor the moment. I will cherish my loved ones and be happy.

2011 has all the look of something special!

Happy New Year!

P.S. The Wesco Fabrics sales incentive trip for 2011 will be to beautiful Barcelona!
