Let me be very clear,...I LOVE BARBECUE! I think it all began on my trips to visit our Wesco Fabrics' warehouse in Dallas many years ago. Steve Beard* and Aubrey Russum* would take me to a nearby barbecue joint for lunch. I've had a real thing for good barbecue ever since!
Last week I was in the check-out line at Central Market, my very favorite market in the universe, and spied a copy of D Magazine's cover on "The best barbecue joints in Dallas." I knew right then I had to have some barbecue!
I was helping to baby sit our grandchildren, so I didn't have a load of extra time to sample the number one spot in the magazine article, Pecan Lodge. I chose a place I've never visited before, Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse on Inwood Road. Locals call it the "Original" and it has been serving great 'cue" since 1958!
There is nothing fancy at the "Original", just wonderful smells coming from the kitchen!
Their original 1958 menu had barbecued ribs for 50 cents and the beef was 35 cents!
I came home with my regular order; brisket, sausage, beans, and coleslaw. The girls were asleep for their nap, so I sat on the porch and shared a great lunch with Marla! I was definitely in barbecue nirvana!
*Steve Beard has worked as a rep for Wesco Fabrics for over 50 years, and still calls on the trade in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Steve really knows good barbecue. Aubrey Russum was plant manager of our Dallas branch and then in our Denver warehouse until his retirement.
